Circuit/System Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors 1 or 2 are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each heated oxygen sensor compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The heated oxygen sensors must reach operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. Heating elements inside the heated oxygen sensor minimize the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. The engine control module (ECM) supplies a reference or bias voltage of about 450 mV to the heated oxygen sensor. When the engine starts, the ECM works in open loop control and ignores the voltage signal from the heated oxygen sensor. Once the heated oxygen sensor reaches operating temperature and closed loop is achieved, the heated oxygen sensor generates a voltage within a range of 0-1 000 mV that fluctuates above and below bias voltage. High heated oxygen sensor voltage indicates a rich exhaust stream. Low heated oxygen sensor voltage indicates a lean exhaust stream.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.

2. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

Note

You must perform the circuit/system verification before proceeding with circuit/system testing.

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B52A Heated Oxygen Sensor 1. Allow sufficient time for the K20 Engine Control Module to completely power down.

2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the B52A Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 harness connector low reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.

3. If greater than 5 Ω, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Ignition ON, verify the HO2S 1 scan tool HO2S Sensor 1 parameter is approximately 450 mV.

5. If greater than the specified value, check the high signal circuit for the B52A heated oxygen sensor 1 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 engine control module.

6. If lower than the specified value, test the high signal circuit for the B52A heated oxygen sensor 1 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 engine control module.

7. Ignition ON, install a 3 A fused jumper wire at the B52A Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 high signal circuit terminal 4. Toggle the other end of the jumper wire between the B52A Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 low signal circuit terminal 3 and battery voltage. Verify the HO2S 1 scan tool HO2S Sensor 1 parameter toggles between 0 mV and approximately 5 000 mV.

8. If the HO2S 1 scan tool HO2S Sensor 1 parameter does not toggle correctly, test the B52A Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 high signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

9. If all circuits test normal, replace the B52A Heated Oxygen Sensor 1.
