Circuit/System Description

During side or frontal impact with sufficient force the Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) will permit voltage through the activation loop to activate the airbag or pretensioner. There are two short pins that make the control circuit when the connector is taken apart. This prevents accidental activation of the airbag or pretensioner during service.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

B0032 01, B0039 01, B0045 01

The pretensioner's control circuit is shorted to voltage for 2 seconds.

B0032 02, B0039 02, B0045 02

The pretensioner's control circuit is shorted to ground for 2 seconds.

B0032 04, B0039 04, B0045 04

The pretensioner's control circuit is open for 2 seconds.

B0032 0D, B0039 0D, B0045 0D

The pretensioner's activation loop's resistance is higher than 4.2 Ω in 2 seconds.

B0032 0E, B0039 0E, B0045 0E

The pretensioner's activation loop's resistance is lower than 1.4 Ω in 2 seconds.

Activity when a diagnostic trouble code is generated


Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) requests that the driver's instrument to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.

Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) stores diagnostic trouble codes, however, the system will be activated in a collision situation.


Conditions for clearing DTCs


A current DTC clears when the malfunction is no longer present.

A history diagnostic trouble code is erased when 100 error-free ignition cycles have been performed.


Diagnosis aids

Note

The following diagnostic aids apply for both current and history DTCs.


An incorrectly installed connector position assurance (CPA) or incorrectly positioned connector can cause a short pin to short both the control circuits to each other. Check that the connectors and connector position assurance, if a diagnostic trouble code with suffix 02 or 0E has been set, to make sure that the short circuit pin has not caused the circuits to short. Short pins are used in the positions listed below:


Driver and passenger seatbelt buckle and pretensioner

Series wiring harness connector

Harness side of the Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) connector


Connector pin's fretting corrosion or improperly placed connector can cause an open circuit/high resistance. Check the circuit's connector pin for fretting corrosion or improperly placed connector if a diagnostic trouble code with the suffix 04 or 0D is set. Diagnostic trouble codes regarding the activation loop in seats may be due to harness fatigue or damage because of seat movement. Move the seat to each end position while checking the activation loop parameters with the diagnostic tool.

If pretensioners, dashboard air bags or seat side air bag is activated in unclear circumstances and/or a diagnostic trouble code with suffix 01 has been set; check both control circuits for short to voltage.

Note

Refer to SIR Service Precautions .

Inspect all connector pins for damage or corrosion when the connectors are dismantled. Damage or corrosion requires repair or replacement of the affected components.

Note

Connector and connector position assurance (CPA) are connected independently. Both the connector and connector position assurance (CPA) are connected with an audible and/or noticeable click. The connector and connector position assurance (CPA) isolate the short-circuit pins in the connector to allow the activation circuit to work.

If the fault is intermittent or cannot be repeated, disconnect the connectors and apply Nyogel lubricant 760G. This reduces the high resistance caused by fretting corrosion.



1. Check with the diagnostic tool that the activation loops resistance values ​​are stable between 2.1 and 4.0 Ω without spikes or dropouts when the wiring harness is moved/bend next to each of the following connectors:

F109 seatbelt pretensioner

All harness connectors

K36 SDM

2. If less than 2.1 or more than 4.0 Ω

Go to Circuit/System Testing.

3. If spikes or dropouts occur, do the following:

Check each connectors' pins and wiring harness for damage or fretting corrosion and repair if necessary.

Apply Nyogel lubricant 760G to each connector pin.

Ensure that each connector and connector position assurance (CPA) is positioned correctly.

4. If within 2.1 and 4.0 Ω without spikes or dropouts

5. All OK


Circuit/System Testing


1. Ignition switch set OFF. diagnostic tool disconnected. It can take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to go to rest. Disconnect the applicable F109 belt buckle connector.

2. Make sure it is more than 25 Ω between the control circuit pin 1 and 2.

3. If 25 Ω or less

3.1. Disconnect X2 wiring harness connector at K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

3.2. Test for infinite resistance between the two control circuits.

3.3. If less than infinite resistance, repair the short between the two circuits.

3.4. If infinite resistance, replace K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

4. If higher than 25 Ω

5. Ignition switch set to DRIVE.

6. Test for less than 11 V between the control circuit pins listed below and ground:

Control circuit pin 1

Control circuit pin 2

7. If 11 V or higher

7.1. Ignition switch set to OFF. Disconnect X2 wiring harness connector at K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). Ignition switch set to DRIVE

7.2. Test for less than 1 V between the control circuit and ground.

7.3. If 1 V or higher, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.

7.4. If less than 1 V, replace K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

8. If less than 11 V

9. Ignition switch set to OFF.

10. Test for more than 25 Ω between the control circuit pins listed below and ground:

Control circuit pin 1

Control circuit pin 2

11. If 25 Ω or less

11.1. Disconnect X2 wiring harness connector at K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

11.2. Test for infinite resistance between the control circuit and ground.

11.3. If less than infinite resistance, repair the circuit to ground on the circuit.

11.4. If infinite resistance, replace K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

12. If higher than 25 Ω

13. Connect a 3 A fuse-protected short-circuit cable between the control circuit's terminal 1 and 2. Ignition switch set to DRIVE.

14. Check that the diagnostic tool activation loop resistance is less than 2 Ω.

15. If 2 Ω or higher

15.1. Ignition switch set to OFF. Disconnect X2 wiring harness connector from K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

15.2. Check that it is less than 2 Ω in each control circuit end to end.

15.3. If 2 Ω or higher, repair the open circuit/high resistance in the circuit.

15.4. If less than 2 Ω, replace K36 Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

16. If less than 2 Ω

17. Replace the applicable F109 seatbelt buckle pretensioner.
